Public transport is an important part of efficient mobility in busy cities like New York. Transportation systems like buses are able to move people quickly, safely, and more affordably to where they need to go, and also reduce congestion and collisions. Unfortunately, drivers are prone to blocking crucial bus lanes, which impacts timing, traffic, and the safety of bus users. Buses need their own lanes in order to operate efficiently Having a separate bus lane and bus stopping area is important for efficient traffic flow. Separating buses from the rest of the vehicles on the road makes the transportation faster and more reliable, as other vehicles are not at play when it comes to congestion. If buses have clear, separate lanes, their trips are predictable for passengers, who can then rely on the scheduled times for their transport. These lanes also help move far more people around per hour than a car can, and so having a separate lane is helpful for busier cities that need to move multiple people around. Buses also help people who have no other transport option, and are cheaper and often safer than other mobility options. For these reasons, many people rely on buses and their lanes and stopping areas to travel to and from work and school, and need to have reliable timings. However, cars have been known to use and block bus lanes in their own efforts to drive faster or avoid traffic, which has knock-on effects for the whole bus system. Along with other important road safety laws in New York, the city is increasing bus system safety with cameras to catch and fine these drivers, who are disturbing the public transportation system. New York buses equipped with cameras to catch lane-blockers Drivers often think that quickly slipping into the bus lane is harmless, and use it as a means to avoid congestion themselves. However, blocking bus lanes or bus stops has a detrimental effect on the transport system and causes delays and even acts as a safety hazard. An official statement from the NYC Metropolitan Transportation Authority explains this Automatic Camera Enforcement Program: The ACE program is a bus-mounted camera system that issues violations to vehicles occupying bus lanes, to double-parked vehicles along bus routes, and to vehicles blocking bus stops. The statement goes on to show how blocking bus areas is a safety problem: When bus stops are blocked, buses cant reach the curb, and people in wheelchairs are often unable to board. In these scenarios, buses are forced to pick up and drop off passengers in the street, creating a safety hazard for all passengers. The new cameras are being implemented along 4 more bus routes The ACE is already in action across 51 bus routes that carry over 840,000 people each week, and will now add 4 more routes along the Q6, Bx20, Bx3 and Bx7 routes in Queens and the Bronx. Drivers who are caught on these cameras will receive a $50 fine for a first offense, but this can go up to $250 for repeat offenders. The program is not just about catching drivers out, but about improving traffic flow and bus trip times, reducing safety issues, and decreasing fuel wastage and emissions. Drivers must respect public transport and the benefits it provides. These new cameras will hopefully reduce the number of cars that use bus lanes and block bus stops, and allow the transportation system to run as efficiently as possible. There are more plans for the advancement of NYC buses in the future, but for now, these cameras will at least create a more reliable system for those who need it.
