  • Stop before you drive: Floridas new $500 law for license plate covers just went into effect

As of October this year, Florida implemented a bill that banned the covering or obscuring of license plates, for good reason. Drivers attempting to evade law enforcement or fines by covering their vehicles plate have been subjected to larger penalties, but citizens have been confused about what exactly is illegal when it comes to their plates. Floridas license plate law Going into effect on October 1st, 2025, Florida House Bill 253 made it illegal to have anything covering or obstructing a drivers license plate, whether on purpose or not. This law also introduced harsher penalties for plate-blocking devices, such as those that flip plates to avoid traffic cameras, and even certain color tints that make it hard to read a number from an image. These violations now cause fines up to $500, and can even send drivers to jail for up to 60 days. The law is aimed at anything that messes with the: legibility, angular visibility, or detectability of the primary features or details, including the license plate number or validation sticker, on the license plate. This is to restrict drivers from evading traffic fines by being able to link vehicles with their drivers, and ensure that people take responsibility if they have done something wrong. However, certain citizens have been quite confused by the new law and have been questioning whether other plate decorations are also now illegal. There are many ways to bling up a license plate, but are they all against the law now? The Florida Sheriffs Association speaks up to settle any confusion. Are all license plate decorations now illegal in Florida? Drivers have been wondering what this bill means for their own plates, and if they need to take away any unique elements they have added to their vehicles. To settle any misunderstandings, the Florida Sheriffs Association spoke up a few weeks ago, specifying that plate frames, which so many drivers are fond of, are not against the law: We want to reassure you that the official FSA license plate frame DOES NOT violate Florida Statute 320.061. The updated law prohibits the use of a license plate obscuring device, defined as any device installed on a vehicle with the intent to cover or obscure letters, numbers, registration decals, or other identifying features on a license plate. FSA license plate frames are not designed to cover or obscure any part of a license plate and do not violate the new law when installed correctly. You may continue to use your FSA license plate frame with confidence. If you have any questions or need additional information, please feel free to reach out. Thank you again for your support of the Florida Sheriffs Association. So what can Florida drivers have on their plates? While Floridas bill against plate blocking devices limits certain plate additions, it is common for drivers to have unique plate frames that add a little decoration to their vehicles. These can be frames with images of trees, manatees, and similar decorations, and are not illegal with this new bill. The Casselberry Police Department posted to inform drivers: We will not be arresting people just for having a basic, simple plate frame. Our focus is on intentional alterations, blocked characters, and unreadable plates or decals. It is possible to have cosmetic accessories that stay within the law. So drivers with simple decorations that add a little character to their plates are good to go. Drivers who are intentionally blocking their numbers are the ones at risk, as this is clearly an attempt to evade the law. Florida is cracking down on unlawful drivers with various traffic regulations to catch those evading the rules. One thing is clear: Floridas roads are about to get a whole lot safer.
