Traffic lights have been pretty standard across the US for over 50 years, allowing all drivers in the country to safely understand road signals and avoid collisions. Traffic lights operate quite efficiently, and there has not been a need to alter them until now. Smart lights are coming to the city of Nashville, and they’re changing the game for traffic everywhere. Why Nashville’s traffic lights are in need of an upgrade after all these years Traffic light technology has been standard across Nashville for many years, and while the standardisation has helped traffic flow and common understanding, it is definitely time for an upgrade to accommodate the advancing city. According to research, Nashville grows by 86 people per day, a population growth that undoubtedly has an effect on traffic around the city. Extra pressure on roadways creates heavier congestion, longer waiting times, and frustrated drivers, mainly due to the outdated lights based on old timings and technology. These older lights run on static timings, which do not account for changes in congestion or problems like crashes, back-ups, or varying rush hour patterns. While the standard traffic light signals have served the people well for 60 years, the lack of modern technology is causing larger problems that now need to be addressed. To combat this issue, Nashville is introducing smart lights based on real-time traffic flow to keep up with the growing city and the increase in cars. Nashville implements smart traffic lights with its Choose How You Move program Nashville’s Choose How You Move Program is a huge upgrade involving the city’s transportation systems, whether you are walking, biking, riding transit, or driving. The program is focused on improving the sidewalks, signals, service, and safety of the roads, and many upgrades have been organised to do so. While there have been rumours of other traffic light changes, this light upgrade is one that is certainly true. Hitting over 600 intersections, the new lights will now modernise old signals and improve traffic flow and safety. These upgraded lights will use advanced technology to monitor traffic, learn the flow, and adapt based on congestion. The lights will use 12 timing plans to update the signals, responding to events like crashes, an increase in pedestrians, and so on. This is crucial as the population grows, in order to accommodate more people using the roads. MaLick Gaye, vice president of livability for the Nashville Area Chamber, talks about the growth: “When we project a decade out, we’re anticipating 295,000 new Nashvillians. Even if a fraction of those people travel by car, it’s going to cause significant congestion issues.” These lights aim to improve traffic despite the growing population The 600-plus Nashville smart lights that are coming to the city will be able to make better use of the roads to improve traffic, despite the growing population. Using advanced technology like sensors, cameras, and traffic data, these lights can pick up real-time congestion and adjust their timings accordingly. These updates are able to reduce wasted time, such as extended green lights when there are no cars, and even inter-light communication, to create smoother driving with fewer red light stops. These lights adjust their timings during rush hour, unexpected crashes, or major events around the city, which traditional lights would otherwise ignore. An additional bonus to these smart lights is the reduced emissions and wasted fuel due to smoother traffic flow. So drivers in Nashville have a lot to look forward to, from a decrease in traffic to an increase in savings, thanks to these new smart traffic lights. These lights join Nashville’s AI camera technology, which is also looking after the safety of the city.
